ACQUISITION UPDATE
Update on the New Jersey American Water acquisition of Salem City Water & Sewer Utility – April 2024
In November 2023, voters in Salem City approved the ballot referendum to transfer ownership of the water and sewer operations to New Jersey American Water.
New Jersey American Water is excited to become your water and wastewater provider. Every day, their team of experts deliver millions of gallons of high-quality water service to approximately 2.9 million people in more than 190 communities across the state.
New Jersey American Water is working with the city to help ensure a smooth transition for customers. The company anticipates completing the acquisition in the middle of 2024, pending approval from the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities.
You will continue to see New Jersey American Water teams within Salem City as we work together to prepare for the sale of the system. Once the sale is completed, customers will receive information from New Jersey American Water to facilitate a smooth transition. The company will also create a dedicated page on its website for Salem City residents, located at www.newjerseyamwater.com, under Customer Service and Billing, after the completion of the sale.
Salem City residents will then be able to take advantage of the company’s customer service benefits, including online account management and billing information and an assistance program, H2O Help to Others, for qualifying customers needing help paying their water and sewer bills.
